Seven people including the postmaster, charged with embezzlement of customer money
A case has been filed against seven people, including postmaster Jasim Uddin, in Ramganj upazila of Lakshmipur for defrauding seven female customers of Tk 3.4 million. The victim, Ferdousi Akhter, filed the case in the court of the district’s Senior Judicial Magistrate (Ramganj) on Tuesday.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Anwar Hossain Mridha, said that Judge Mohammad Ismail has taken cognizance of the incident in the court. The court has ordered the officer-in-charge (OC) of Ramganj police station to take up the case in this incident. The other six victims are witnesses in the case. The accused Jasim is a former postmaster of Ramganj upazila post office. He is currently working as a master at Senbag upazila post office in Noakhali.
The plaintiff in the case, Ferdousi Akhter Beauty, said that she and seven female customers went to the post office to buy savings certificates. But the then postmaster Jasim Uddin and his associate Abdur Rahim asked them to open an account with Bank Asia to buy savings certificates. According to their statement, the victims deposited a total of Tk 3.4 million with the agent entrepreneur Anwar Hossain at Bank Asia from January 4, 2022.
The victims alleged that they received dividends for the first few months, but later it stopped. After learning about the matter, they realized that they had been cheated.
The other accused in the case are Neyamat Ulya, District Manager of Bank Asia’s Channel Banking Division, Business Officer Alamgir Hossain, Former employee of Ramganj Upazila Post Office Abdur Rahim, Agent Bank entrepreneur Anwar Hossain, his daughter Rukaiya Hossain and relative Monir Hossain. Among them, Anwar Hossain is currently in jail in a check forgery case.
Jasim Uddin said, I did not ask anyone to open an account in the bank through him. When Anwar did not support him, he complained to the local MP in my name. Apart from that, I did not accept his agent bank’s checks. When I asked him to pay the bank’s checks directly, he did not pay. Later, I also informed the then manager of the Ramganj branch of Bank Asia Limited about the matter. I thought Anwar would cheat.
Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Bashar said, “We have not received any court order so far. Legal action will be taken if we receive a copy.”
